A Day In The Life Of Gardening

For as long as we have been married, Pat has always had a garden. He loves to get out in the dirt and mess around. We started out with just tomatoes, green peppers and onions. That was many moons ago. We now have a "real" garden. He works very dilligently to prep the soil and make sure it's ready come planting time. I'm not as big a gardener as he but he does have a wonderful little helper that jumps at the chance to go out in the back 40 with him and get in the dirt.......... yes, you guessed it - ABBIE!

So, last weekend we went out to plant some of our veggies. Pat had already planted the garlic (last September) and my green onions as well as his regular onions. You'll note below that Abbie feels the need to do her inspection to make sure all is growing the way it should.

OK, the onions and garlic looked good, now to make sure the beans, tomatoes and peppers were ready to roll.

YEP, all looks good. We had her OK to go ahead and proceed with the planting process. She supervised as we placed the plants and seeds into mother earth. Abbie has always loved wandering through the garden and especially loves when the corn has grown tall. I think she feels as if we can't see her as she's roaming through the rows and with her being a beagle, that nose is always covered with dirt when she emerges.

Finally, all the seeds are sown and we just have to wait for the growing process to begin. It doesn't take too long because of the wonderful job Pat has done in getting everything ready and all the rows marked. However, some of us were pretty tuckered out. Supervising is a pretty intense job with a lot of responsibility and when done correctly, well, let's just say a break is in order.

So, with a big paws up from Abbie, we'll sit back and watch mother nature do her thing.
I'll be posting a photo journal of the garden on the side of the page so we can see how well the garden grows.
Sorry, this post had a mind of its own today and is not formatting like I want it to. :(

Abbie probably wonders why Pat's plants grow and the bones she plants don't.

So you have a 4 legged supervisor also? They can be quite picky.

I would love to have a veggie garden also. How do you keep out the racoons, squirells and bunnies????
I also worry about our Ozzie, being a male dog, he PEE'S on EVERYTHING outside. I have my herbs in a pot up on a table now...learned my lesson the hard way. ewwww.

Suz, believe it or not, we put human hair around everything and it keeps the critters away.

Jen, ABSOLUTELY!

Abbey is the best gardener! She is adorable, but then I love almost all dogs.

I can't wait to see the produce!
